wing divers logoWing Diver's Treasure Hunt Dive Event @ Twin Lakes 2010 Synopsis

The Twin Lakes Treasure Hunt dive event was held on June 19th (and 20th) this year and was a great success.  We are excited that the event was attended by 36 registered divers, plus their friends & families who traveled from all over Alberta!

Divers came from Red Deer, Rimbey, Rocky Mountain House, Edmonton, Calgary, Wainwright, Cold Lake and, of course, Mike from Winfield (no, not Canmore).

Wing Diver vice pres: Gord Ross welcomed everyone & began the dive briefing at 10am sharp to the large contingent of divers in various stages of suiting up, all enjoying the morning sun & cool breeze off the water.  Once he had finished explaining the various dive events & reminding the divers about dive safety, it soon became a beehive of activity with divers scattered about the decks & waterfront with mountains of gear, tanks & accessories, all in preparation for the day's diving.  It wasn't long before the first team of divers made the trek down the dock and onto the submerged platform to make their final buddy checks before heading underwater.   For the next 3 hours, the dock area became a super highway of divers with eager teams of scuba-enthusiasts coming & going in a steady steam of huffing & puffing!

The dive events consisted of a scavenger hunt style mystery dive, a navigation dive, a hole-in-one golf challenge & of course our standard lake/shore cleanup.  The navigation event was the only timed event and required teams of divers to navigate to a bucket suspended at 25' underwater which was filled with golf balls, bring one back to the starting point at the dock.  It's always fun to watch the bubbles of those speedy divers heading out in a great arc miles from the destination point or to see those making that bee-line straight for the marker only to continue far past!  But enough about my own navigation skills (or lack thereof).

Our mystery dive challenges the divers to finding 3 different locations underwater in which bags of parts were attached & then seeing if they could be assembled into ..... the mystery item.  There were points awarded for certain accomplishments & points deducted for missing various details.  I believe the winning entry scored a minus four!  Obviously a challenging event.

Of course, no Wing Diver event would be possible without some awesome food & true to form, we all enjoyed a BBQlunch & for those who chose to stay, a BYOM(bring your own meat/veggie) BBQ after the awards ceremony.  Then a Father's Day Pancake breakfast was served up by our popular volunteers to those who camped overnight.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the event & for all the volunteers who worked hard (Mike, Gord, Linda R & Linda P) to put together another terrific AUC/Wing Diver Dive Alberta 2010 event!

We look forward to seeing you all again next year!  Happy Diving,

Dave Pohl (on behalf of the Wing Divers Club)
